Ernst Gombrich, “The Earliest Description of Bosch’s Garden of Delight,” JWCI 30 (1967), 403-6, or how the triptych looked a dozen years before it was painted

In honor of the upcoming Hieronymus Bosch conference, here’s what it’s all based on, or at least what the attribution of The Garden of Delights/El Jardín de las Delicias to Hieronymus Bosch is based on. Gombrich (whose dissertation was on a Raphael associate) and Steppe (a tapestry expert) both pointed attention away from the Raphael tapestries that were the biggest show in town.
